Call for runners: DZMM ‘TAKBO PARA SA KARUNUNGAN’ TAKES OFF MARCH 11

Press Release:

DZMM is mounting the second annual “DZMM Takbo Para sa Karunungan,” a fun run that will benefit scholars from Sendong-hit Cagayan de Oro and Iligan, on March 11, 6 a.m. at the Quirino Grandstand.

Interested participants may opt to join in the 3 km, 5 km, 10 km and 21 km race categories.

Continuing last year’s advocacy for education, the event will be for the benefit of 25 students from Cagayan de Oro and 25 more from Iligan who were robbed of their chance to study when Sendong devastated their cities. It will also raise funds for the continued scholarship of the 25 Ondoy victims who were chosen as beneficiaries of last year’s run.

DZMM started organizing such an event in 1999, when it launched the “DZMM Takbo Para sa Kalikasan”. The run, which was annually held until 2010, was in support of several campaigns for the environment such as the continued rehabilitation of the La Mesa watershed and the Pasig Rehabilitation Project through ABS-CBN Foundation's “Bantay Kalikasan”.

Registration fees for this year’s “DZMM Takbo Para sa Karunungan” are at Php 300, Php 350, Php 400 and Php 500.

The event will prove to be enjoyable because apart from contributing to a good cause, the participants will also have a great time watching a set of performances. Moreover, plaques will be awarded to government agencies and non-government organizations with largest contingents, while cash prizes and trophies will be given to the top winners of the 3 km, 5km, 10km, and 21 km races.

To register, visit www.dzmm.com.ph or call the secretariat at 4152272 local 5674, 5641, 5632, 5603 and 5638.

BERNADETTE FIGHTS FOR THE MENTALLY ILL IN “KRUSADA

People with mental disorders or illnesses are often subjects of mockery and are unjustly incarcerated or abandoned by the judgmental public that labels them ‘lunatics’ or ‘crazy.’

Tomorrow (Feb 16) in “Krusada,” Bernadette Sembrano will examine how the government attends to the needs of the mentally ill and if it provides adequate support and attention to mental health care facilities in the country.

“We often forget that there are people with mental illnesses who need sufficient medical attention. We should re-evaluate if medicine and hospital confinement are their only options for their cure,” she said.

Bernadette has been actively engaged in missions that benefit the mentally ill for her involvement with ABS-CBN Foundation’s Sagip Kapamilya. They rescued the woman who figured in the news for living in a mosquito net in Guinobatan, Albay and the Reodava siblings in Aklan who have since gotten well.

Due to her experience with Sagip Kapamilya, Bernadette has also fought for the improvement of the conditions of mental facilities in the country.

There may be existing psychiatric units and day-treatment centers, but most of them are located in Metro Manila and cannot be accessed by patients in rural areas.

Listen, take part and be one with Bernadette’s crusade because it takes more than words to make a stand. Watch “Krusada,” which is nominated in the Social Issues/Current Events category at the prestigious 2012 New York Festivals International Television & Film Awards, tomorrow (Feb 16) after “Bandila” on ABS-CBN, or earlier on DZMM TeleRadyo (SkyCable Channel 26),
9:15 PM.
